Description

The French language is teeming with expressions! There are over ten thousand of them, and many are used daily—sometimes without us even realizing it. Unlike standard vocabulary, these expressions are rarely taught in school; they come from childhood.
We inherit this heritage from our grandparents, parents, neighbors, and friends—from everyday life.
Bit by bit—much like a bird building its nest—Michel Boucher has been collecting expressions, acting like a devoted family man. By 2004, when *Mille et un bonheurs d’expression* was published by Actes Sud Junior, he had already cataloged more than six thousand of them.
So, without overcomplicating matters, it was only natural for Savoie-biblio to contact him about creating a game based on these expressions. The author—who is also an illustrator—took the task seriously. *En avant les expressions* allows players to explore around sixty different expressions. Michel Boucher doesn’t beat around the bush, though; he also gives players a real challenge. First, they must decipher images (his illustrations) to identify the underlying expression, and then figure out what that expression actually means.
And all this happens casually, while playing dominoes!
There is no need to outmaneuver opponents or beat them at the finish line here, as there are neither winners nor losers. Ultimately, however, players will certainly become more attuned to the expressions used in daily life—and will likely dive headfirst into the books that accompany the game!
